Why fees matter so much
Index funds track a market (like the FTSE All-Share or a global index) at very low cost. Because returns compound, even a small annual fee compounds against you over decades. This calculator lets you enter an expected gross return and an annual fee, and applies the return net of that fee, so you can see how much charges quietly cost over 20-30 years.
Worked example
300/month for 25 years at 7% gross, 0.3% total fees gives net about 6.7%.
Total invested = 90,000.
Projected value about 216,000. At 1.2% fees instead, you would end with tens of thousands less.
Hold index funds inside an ISA or pension where possible to shelter the growth from tax. Past performance does not guarantee future returns, and values can fall as well as rise.

Frequently asked questions
What return should I use?
There is no guaranteed figure. Many long-term investors model a global-equity return of around 5-7% a year before inflation, then stress-test with lower numbers. Always treat projections as illustrative.
What counts as fees?
Combine the fund's ongoing charge (OCF) and your platform/account fee. A typical low-cost global tracker plus platform might total around 0.3-0.5% a year.
