Understanding loan repayments
A typical UK personal loan is repaid in equal monthly instalments over a fixed term, with the APR (Annual Percentage Rate) capturing the interest plus most compulsory fees. A longer term reduces the monthly payment but increases the total interest paid; a shorter term costs more each month but less overall.
Worked example
10,000 over 5 years at 9.9% APR gives about 212/month.
Total repaid about 12,720, so interest is roughly 2,720.
Over 3 years instead, the payment rises but total interest drops to about 1,580.

Frequently asked questions
Is APR the same as the interest rate?
APR includes the interest rate plus certain compulsory fees, so it is a fairer way to compare loans. The advertised representative APR is only offered to a proportion of accepted applicants; your actual rate may differ.
Can I pay a loan off early?
Usually yes. Under UK rules you can make early/partial settlement, though lenders may add up to around two months' interest as an early settlement charge. Check your agreement.
