Planning backwards from your goal
Instead of guessing, this calculator works backwards from your target. Tell it how much you need, when you need it, what you have already saved and the interest rate you expect, and it returns the monthly contribution required. Interest does some of the work, so the longer your timeframe, the less you need to put in each month.
Worked example
Goal 20,000 in 4 years. Already saved 3,000. Interest 4%.
Your 3,000 grows to about 3,510, leaving about 16,490 to find.
Required saving about 317/month.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I keep short-term savings?
For goals within a few years, capital safety matters more than returns - an easy-access or fixed-rate Cash ISA or savings account is typical. For goals 5+ years away, some people invest instead, accepting more risk.
What rate should I enter?
Use a rate you can realistically get on the account you will use. If you are unsure, enter a conservative figure so you do not under-save.
